Could have easily been changed into "A bus drove into oncoming traffic".
That would be short and concise, and straight to the point, but then you have to think, when was the last time you ever hear a newscaster be short and concise when reporting on a big incident?
Literally yesterday. You can't be more concise and straight to the point like "Deadly explosion rocked a subway in St. Petersburg"

Terrorism in Russia isn't exactly one of the big newsworthy subjects when it comes to American news media.

"You are looking obviously at a very disturbing live-shot there. That is the world trade center, and we have unconfirmed reports, this morning, that a plane has crashed into one of the towers of the world trade center."

Both terrorism incidents are breaking news stories which doesn't match up with what we have in game, where the news is about recurring incidents that have been going on for a while. But still, you see a very large discrepancy in real news when it comes to "stories that matter".

Good Morning Britain:
"America's darkest hour: Overnight it's reported that up to 25,000 people may be missing. This morning there's confirmation that many are still alive under the rubble."

When a news station is putting out big stories and getting views, that's when they add the flourish to their words.

"Developments tonight about the engineer of that amtrak train being questioned by authorities about the deadly derailment in Philadelphia."

In this instance you're left until the exact end of the sentence to know what she's even talking about.

To be fair, the equivalent we're talking about here would shorten your example to "A subway blew up in St. Petersburg."

Even with the original example from Persona 5 you're missing details already, such as what kind of bus was it? They might be more rare in Japan, but in America we have city buses and school buses, as well as tour buses. "Public transit bus" is a very short and concise way to make this clear. "Was driven down an opposing lane" vs. "drove into oncoming traffic" hardly saves time in communicating. Then completely removing "with its customers still in it!" not only removes the flavor, but the concrete information that non-employees were involved.

Again, this is a silly thing to pick at. Though I haven't found any glaring problems in the text, I'm sure there are worse sins in the game than a short sentence an off-screen newscaster says while you're otherwise preoccupied.

What are you even talking about.

The whole point of news stations is communicating information to the masses. In order to fulfill that purpose, they use concise and straightforward language to let that information reach as many people as possible. Although there's several fuck ups every now and then, a majority of the time, news stations tend to communicate information concisely and straightforwardly because that's how the media works. "A public transit bus was driven down an opposing lane with its customers still in it!" is awakward. Nobody talks like that and the media doesn't say awkward shit like this. It breaks immersion.

Also what. Comparing a bus attack with a terrorist event that confused and shocked the nation is too much of a stretch.

The point of news stations is ratings. They have no obligation to the people, or at least not anymore they don't. If and when there are any individuals within those organizations that care about getting the information to the public, those people are not on TV, but are rather out collecting information which will be announced by a public personality.

I gave an example of an event that would have been on the highest of priorities where viewership would have been at its max, to point out how news media behaves when its viewership is so high. I also gave an example of a similar incident that didn't have anything to do with terrorism, and was merely a train derailing, similar to the event in Persona 5. Both incidents took place on American soil, and I listed one video that was another country reporting on 9/11 to show that it isn't simply American news media that flourish their reporting.

News Media Organizations are there to make money all the same as any other non-public funded organization. When they don't care about a story but want to make sure they report on it, or multiple stories and it fills in the time fairly nicely, then they don't care about how they say it, so short and concise is the easiest way to do it.

Japan isn't America. Their news organizations don't rely on ratings. Every household with a TV in Japan is mandated into paying a fee for the NHK. Which is Japan's major source of news.

The point of news stations isn't ratings either. It's literally communicating news. That's the only reason why people tune into those stations in the first place. Communicating news efficiently is how you gets ratings anyways.

Sure, that makes sense. I think if you adhered to that you'd get people complaining about how it's too literal of a translation.

It's possible. From what I've heard, the Japanese are way too passive in sentence structure when it comes to reporting news, which is why it sounds so strange to us since Americans commonly make sentences active in sentence structure. Actually, I think Americans actively discourage passive sentence structure.

50 hours in since I bought it 4 days ago. I spent almost all of days playing it. I wonder what make it so addicting. Japanese voice DLC still isn't available for me yet, I might as well finished the first playthrough in English. Its not that bad anyway.

So far 15 hours into the game and I’ve beaten the first palace and I’m at the second palace. I’m really taking my time with this game, since there’s so many things to do, I want to make sure I’m doing the most useful activities in the game. But yeah, it was kinda hard to do the entirety of the first palace in one night. But no matter what, you have to leave the dungeon near the end to place a “calling card”. So a palace will automatically waste two days. Anyways, the second time I have to go to the palaces, I’ll grind as much as I can, so I’m not wasting the day.

The only issue I have with this game is that Morgana forces you to go to sleep without doing anything on the days something story-related happens, because he says that you’re tired. Damn kitty, I go to sleep when I wanna go to sleep. I could be spending that time on Confidants.

I feel bad for the Personas when I fuse them. I wonder what the previous protagonist would think about this kind of fusion.

I like the Public Execution though, I could get rid of any Persona and maybe get something new entirely.

Just beat the first dungeon, gotta say I'm really impressed with the game. Didn't know Japanese audio was DLC so I just started playing the dubbed version. Ignoring Morgana voice, which gets annoying after hearing it so much in battle, I'm shocked at how good it is. Specifically Ann and Sojiro, there voices perfectly match there character. The menus are so god damn slick and that music playing in the gun store is great. Takemi best girl but not enough GUTS yet to find out why.

Didn't go for the Japanese audio since I don't really like it in Persona but the English audio is dope. I have the Japanese audio add on downloaded though, I'll try it out sometime.

I can't attest to the JP yet since I haven't downloaded it, but so far the English is very good. In a lot of past games you'd hear a non-important faceless character speak and you could tell it was half assed, but in this case it seems just as good as the rest of it.

Honestly with what I've played so far, I'd have to give it a 10. I only had one minor gripe with it regarding the plot, but I expect that to be resolved over time, and it feels half resolved already as it is.

The only other games I'd give a 10 to are FF7 and OoT. I'm not just throwing that around loosely, but I do have to finish the game before I stick to that score.

Finally started the second dungeon and it's been a blast so far. Pronunciation of names is off in the dub, but everything else has been fairly decent so far bar some strange translations, but this has happened in previous games as well. Not that big a deal as people were making it out to be ITT. Way too much Morgana though.

-What should play whenever you send a calling card-

I've been fiending this game all week and I've finally hit the 50 hour mark today. Whoever was in charge of designing the July dungeon deserves a raise because it's easily my favorite Persona dungeon to date and I didn't think it'd be possible to one-up the museum or the bank. So far it's trumped 3/4 in every possible category especially waifus and it's going to hard to go back to Golden after this. I don't even mind those days where the only interaction I have as a player is pressing X to go to bed because even the story is pretty good this time around.

Goddamn, ATLUS this was definitely worth the wait, just wish y'all weren't so anal about people recording footage.

English VA isn't bad but I like the Japanese more. Probably because I can recongize some of them from anime I have watched. Morgana is clearly Chopper. The protagonist sounds cooler too.

I played the game for days, only now do I saw a Confidant among the crowds in the loading screen when you enter location where they are in. I guess it doesn't work in quick travel.

Anybody know what the bad endings are like? I know they're just hallucinations but I heard Makoto gets drugged, beaten, and raped in one of them if you fail to complete her story-related dungeon.

I didn't even know there were bad ends for failing the dungeons until after I beat the game. I got one bad end for failing to pick the right choices at the right time like in P4 though.
